Scotland midfielder Don Cowie could make his return from injury away to Burnley tomorrow (Saturday).

Cowie suffered a medial knee ligament injury in Watford’s defeat at Portsmouth on October 16 and was initially expected to be out for four to six weeks.

The 27-year-old, pictured, has been training with the squad towards the end of this week and manager Malky Mackay claims Cowie could return for the trip to Turf Moor.

Mackay said: “Don had been with the physios last week and the early part of this week but he is back in training with the squad.

“So depending on how he reacts to training, there is a good chance he could be in the squad on Saturday.”

Danny Graham was the only other injury doubt this week after coming off injured at Crystal Palace but has been given the all clear to play.

Mackay said: “Danny came off with an ankle knock on Tuesday but he has been training with the squad and should be fine.”

Burnley have retained much of the squad which played in the Premier League and Mackay expects Brian Laws’ side to make a promotion push at the first attempt.

Mackay said: “Over the course of the 46 games I think the strength of their squad will tell and I expect them to be in the top six at the finish.

“They have a lot of experienced players and in one case, Graham Alexander, they have someone who has played over 900 games.

“Burnley have real strength in depth so it is sure to be a tough match and it is certainly not an easy place to go to.”

Today (Friday) could see a couple of the Hornets’ defenders leaving the club, as the Watford Observer understands Rob Kiernan and Tom Aldred will be joining League Two clubs on loan until January 5.

We understand Kiernan will be joining Bradford City and summer-signing Aldred will link up with Stockport County.
