Gavin Mahon is training with the Watford squad but manager Sean Dyche says there are “no guarantees” the midfielder will be offered a contract despite their good friendship.

Mahon has not played a first team game since November 2009 due to injury and a lack of opportunities at Queens Park Rangers, where he has been on several short-term contracts in the last couple of seasons.

The 34-year-old made 215 appearances for Watford between 2002 and 2008 when he played with new Hornets boss Sean Dyche.

When asked about the possibility of Mahon returning to Vicarage Road permanently, Dyche said: “It depends on the situation. I know Gavin Mahon personally from our playing days together; he is an excellent pro and a good friend.

“I said to him it would be no problem him coming in to train but there is no guarantee regarding his future. He will also no doubt have other offers.

“The main thing is getting Gavin fit and having him around the place can only be beneficial.”
