The Hornets were first to go close as winger Michael Kalu was unable to direct Sean Murray’s inviting cross goalwards, heading wide.

Newcastle had a similar opportunity moments later and could have scored when Adam Campbell’s effort at goal was just blocked in time by Aaron Tumwa.

More excellent defending from Tommie Hoban and Kyle Connolly kept the scores level but then two goals in three minutes cost Watford.

Dennis Knight put Michael Hoganson through and the Newcastle winger finished well for his third goal in two games.

The lead was doubled two minutes later when the visitors lost possession in midfield and did not close down Knight quick enough. Knight ran from inside his own half before firing a low strike which went underneath Jack Bonham.

Murray whipped in another dangerous cross ten minutes before the break, this time Hoban was unable to reach the delivery, but it was a rare chance for Watford.

They were slightly fortunate not to be further behind at half time as Campbell has an effort deflected wide and then Marcus Maddison forces Bonham to tip over.

Watford made an attacking change at half time with striker Dereece Gardner coming on for centre midfielder Austin Eaton.

Both sides had to wait ten minutes for the first effort of the second half, as Hoganson drags his shot wide.

Watford survived a scare when Bonham was unable to claim the ball diving at Campbell’s feet and the highly-rated striker tried his luck from a tight angle. Hoganson collected the ball and his effort, also from a tight angle, was deflected over.

The Hornets gave themselves a chance with 11 minutes remaining as Michael Kalu powerfully headed Murray’s corner into the roof of the net.

Watford were applying pressure and substitute Luke O’Nien dribbled shot wide but it wasn’t enough.
