Sebastien Edgar was on the scoreboard again for Team GB but they were once again beaten in the Copper Box, suffering a 32-21 loss to Argentina.

Both sides were looking for their first win in the competition having lost their opening two games in Group A.

Watford-based Edgar had said this fixture was the squad’s target coming into the Olympic tournament and it showed as they put on an impressive display, looking to attack and frustrate at the same time.

Chris McDermott handed Team GB an early lead but the Argentines were immediately on the goal trail, scoring twice before Steven Larsson brought the scores level again.

Gonzalo Matias Carou’s quick-fire hat-trick put Britain on the back foot but goals were exchanged until McDermott netted again, closing the gap to one at 7-6.

Mistakes were being made by both sides in possession which helped to keep the score ticking over, with Argentina’s Juan Manuel Vazquez bagging four in a row.

Three unanswered goals looked to have put Britain in trouble but they immediately rallied with three of their own, including two fast-breaks in quick succession from Mark Hawkins which saw him complete a hat-trick.

It was a game where the momentum kept swinging from one side to the other though. Team GB looked to be on the up with four minutes of the half remaining but three further goals from Argentina saw them take a 16-11 lead into the interval.

It could have been even better for the South Americans however, were it not for an outstanding double save from Jesper Parker in the host nation’s goal, showing lightning-quick reactions to make one block before getting to his feet and repeating the trick.

The second half started as a cagier affair with the goals seemingly less free-flowing.

Both sides had netted once when Britain got caught in possession trying to run the clock down after Robin Garnham had been handed a two-minute suspension.

Diego Esteban Simonet stole in to run clear on goal and finish before netting in similar circumstances minutes later, pouncing on a sloppy free throw to make the score 20-13.

Argentina were looking to put some more breathing space between the two sides and with Britain unable to gather any attacking momentum, they duly did, extending the advantage to 22-14 with ten minutes of the second half played.

The South Americans were dominant at this point and it took a seven metre throw from Larsson to end a run of nine straight goals Team GB had conceded, bringing the score to 30-15.

Britain were back in the goals at 31-19 when Gawain Vincent netted but the result was already beyond doubt even when Edgar got himself on the scoreboard for the hosts’ 20th goal, latching on to a long ball over the top and making no mistake with the finish.

But there was to be no comeback as both sides struck once more to see Argentina claim the points.
