Nils Mordt admits that Saracens will have to improve their basic skills by the London Double Header – the traditional Aviva Premiership season-opener – if they are to beat London Irish at Twickenham on September 1.

For the first time in the history of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Premiership Rugby 7s Series, Saracens did not reach the finals – a failure Mordt blames on their inability to hold on to the ball.

While he was left frustrated at missing out at the Rec, Mordt is already looking towards the new season where he is desperate to force his way into Mark McCall’s plans.

He said: “I can’t wait for the season to get started. We have a warm-up game against Bedford and it will be good to put a marker down for the 15-man format in that and then I want to kick on for selection in that first game of the Aviva Premiership season against Irish.

“All the guys who have played in Bath have to put themselves in a good position and hopefully they will get opportunities this year.

“The best thing about Saracens is that everybody is dying for a spot. At the end of the day we all know it’s a team sport and we will all be used over the season but it doesn’t stop us from competing for a spot every single week.

“We coughed up the ball too often and made silly errors at the wrong time at the 7s but it’s all easily rectifiable and the boys worked really hard and I am very proud of them.”

Sarries skipper at the J.P Morgan Premiership 7s; Mordt faces a huge battle to break into the first team for the showpiece opener, with competition from the likes of Owen Farrell and Charlie Hodgson for the number ten jersey.

But regardless of who gets the nod, World Cup winner Will Greenwood is confident Sarries will get past the Exiles and kick off their campaign in better style than a year ago when they were shocked by Wasps.

Greenwood said: “Despite how they have done in the 7s I think London Irish will be beaten by Saracens.

“The London Double Header is a great day out at the start of the Aviva Premiership season.

“We saw that it put Sarries on the back foot last season when they lost to Wasps. We thought Wasps were going to come with a bit of a charge but then look what happened to those guys.

“Rugby in the Premiership is getting bigger and better in terms of the brand of rugby being played and I’m really looking forward to the start if the season.

“If the London Double Header is your home game and you win it, the people who have lost away from home say ‘well done’, but we won’t worry.

“But if that’s your away game and you can clean up there then the opposition still have to come back to yours and it gives you an advantage.”
