Neil Cox joined the Hornets from Bolton Wanderers for £500,000, having been part of the side beaten by Watford at Wembley in the Play-Off final the previous May.
Club captain during many of almost 250 games over five-and-a-half years, he survived being briefly marginalised by Gianluca Vialli to skipper the side during the difficult spell following the Italian's departure when the club's staff, players included, accepted a pay deferral.
