A “sinkhole” has opened up outside Watford General Hospital, causing traffic to be diverted away from the entrance.

The hole was first seen around 2.30pm outside the main entrance to the hospital building, by 4pm it had grown much larger and covered most of the road.

Hospital security directed motorists around the hole and ambulances were reportedly able to access the hospital using a different entrance.

Joshua Zachariah Ellis said in a post on Facebook: "The entire roadway is undermined all the way down the hill."

Hospital visitor Kirrily Spires said: “It’s just getting bigger and bigger.

“At first it wasn’t even noticed but then we said, you can’t have cars driving over that.

“People said it looked like it might go further down if it rains.”

Her mother, Lucy Spires added: "It's good, I suppose, that it’s a Sunday so not so busy now compared to tomorrow.

"But I don't see how they will be able to fix it by tomorrow."
