Con artists are currently targeting motorists in Watford with two scams.
Fake penalty charge notice (PCN) texts are being sent out to people in Watford, “reminding” them to pay outstanding fines that they never received.
In a warning yesterday (June 25), Watford Borough Council confirmed that it does not send text reminders for payment of outstanding PCNs.
“If you receive a text message requesting payment for a PCN, do not click on any links in the message,” it added. “This is a scam.”

Examples of the scam should be reported to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk/.
The council has also received reports of fraudulent card reader stickers being “illicitly” placed on pay and display machines in the town.
Residents were advised to “always remain vigilant” when using the machines and to report anything suspicious to the council’s parking service via email to parking@watford.gov.uk.
A picture of three of the stickers, which look like a legitimate car reader, and a chip capable of connecting to a phone that they could cover were shared as part of the warning message.
