A Watford boardgame café with a perfect rating on TripAdvisor quickly showed me why it was so beloved by customers.

D20 Boardgame café, which opened in 2017, clearly has a dedicated community of board game fanatics, but casual dice rollers will find a lot to enjoy.

Customers at the Queen’s Road café can pick up any game out of the hundreds lining the walls and play while they order food and drink, or as the main attraction.

The café is open from 12-10.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday, and costs £2 per hour, with the fourth hour free and concessions at £1 an hour.

The wide-ranging menu offers many burgers, sharing plates, tacos, chips, desserts, beer, coffee, wine, milkshakes, and smoothies to choose from.

The selection of games was even more varied, making it impossible to make a choice.

Luckily the staff were very knowledgeable and offered recommendations based on the type of games the group of friends I brought to play against were interested in.

We started with King of Tokyo, a fast-paced game about giant monsters.

It seemed simple, until we finished the first round and realised all the strategies which we should have tried so immediately started another go.

Next up was Machi Koro 2, another great staff recommendation, which has players build business empires in card-based cities while stealing from each other.

Between turns we ordered two sharing plates of nachos (£8.50 for enough to serve two) milkshakes (£5.80), and a ‘homebrewed’ can of beer (£4.40), which were all delicious.

Over time, the café moved from parents playing games with their children, to adults meeting friends after work, a Dungeons and Dragons game, and what looked like a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament.

There was a great atmosphere and anyone who enjoys throwing dice, from an occasional Monopoly player to a dedicated dungeon master, will find a great way for hours to fly by.

D20 also schedules regular events in store, such as quizzes, tournaments, and game nights with a clear focus on maintaining a strong sense of community among its staff and customers.

My only complaint is that I somehow never won a single round.
