A popular discount store has reiterated its desire to open in Watford.

Home Bargains told shoppers early last year to “watch this space” after confirming it was “definitely interested” in coming to the town.

The prospect sparked delight on social media, with speculation rife over where it could potentially open – the former John Lewis unit among the common suggestions.

However, with no movement since, the Watford Observer approached Home Bargains for the latest update.

A spokesperson said: “Our position on opening a store in Watford remains the same. We are keen to open a store once the right opportunity is available to us.”

Atria Watford was previously asked whether it is actively trying to add Home Bargains to its offering, but a spokesperson said “we don’t ever comment on speculation regarding potential new tenants”.

Watford BID was also approached at the time, but chief executive Maria Manion voiced doubts over whether there were adequately-sized units available outside of atria.

Home Bargains, which has over 500 outlets UK-wide, was among Watford Observer readers’ most common answers when naming one shop the town really needs.

A spokesperson previously said: “It is fantastic to hear that the people of Watford are so keen for us to open a store in the town.

“We are definitely interested in coming to Watford, and we are always actively looking for the right location, not just in Watford, but across the whole country.

“So, watch this space for further developments!"
