A restaurant has been handed a 1/5 food hygiene rating after being caught unprepared by an inspection soon after opening.
Gusto Italia Restaurant took over the former Par 3 Lounge unit at the Bushey Golf and Country Club building in High Street, Bushey, at the end of February.
Hertsmere Borough Council inspectors visited on March 31 and the report has now been published, warning “major improvement” is necessary.
The 'hygienic food handling' category and the 'cleanliness and condition of facilities and building' category were both rated good, but the overall rating was dragged down by a low score for 'management of food safety'.
Management at the restaurant highlighted how soon after opening the inspection had come and stressed that all issues raised during the inspection have since been addressed.
Following evidence of this improvement being provided, a reinspection is expected soon.

Problems were largely related to failings with documentation, including staff not keeping proper records for the food, Gusto Italia added.
On the day of the inspection, a large delivery of food had apparently come in and, due to the restaurant being short staffed, some sealed food containers had been temporarily left on the ground.
Gusto Italia Restaurant serves both Italian and Sri Lankan cuisine, while also offering a location for venue hire and private dining.
