Gary Lineker has welcomed Watford back to the Premier League - while making a dig at the failed Super League.

Watford have been promoted just nine months after they were relegated from the top flight.

The Hornets secured the second automatic promotion spot - following in Norwich City's footsteps - with a 1-0 victory over Millwall on Saturday afternoon.

Following the game, Lineker wrote on Twitter: "Welcome back to the top flight to @WatfordFC, joining another of last season’s relegated clubs, @NorwichCityFC.

"The Premier League is such a closed shop."

The 12-team Super League, set up by the seven afore-mentioned teams and Spain's Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid and Italy's AC Milan and Juventus was announced on Sunday to widespread condemnation.

The league would have been a sealed competition for its dozen or more founder members, meaning they couldn't be demoted from it for at least two decades.

All six Premier League teams involved have now withdrawn from the competition.

Manchester City were the first club to pull out after Chelsea had signalled their intent to do so by preparing documentation to withdraw.

The other four sides - Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham - all followed suit hours later.

With two games remaining in the season, Watford can still clinch the Championship title, although they will need Norwich to fail to win either of their two remaining games.

Match-winning goalscorer Ismaila Sarr said this afternoon he was delighted to be returning to the Premier League where he is now eyeing up improvement.

The winger was brought down in the box and converted a penalty in the 11th minute to grab his fourth goal in five matches and steer Xisco's men to victory.

He said he feels he has benefited from Xisco's attacking brand of football and that he can do even more damage when the Hornets begin their top flight campaign after the summer break.
