The spectacular Christmas lights at Watford town centre went through a little blip during the switch-on event.

Watford-born X-Factor winners Rak-Su pushed the button at the switch-on event yesterday (November 13) to light up the town and set the Christmas spirit this year – after the popular event was cancelled last year due to Covid restrictions.

While the event drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, there was a little issue where just a star lit up when the all-important button was pressed.

The end of the countdown was met with laughter after realising there was a technical difficulty and the band members styled it out.

"Somebody forgot to pay the electricty bill," the band joked.

The rest of the lights eventually did turn on and illuminated the town.

Myles Stephenson, I’m a Celeb star and Rak-Su band member, said: “I loved playing at the light switch on- we had a little hiccup when the lights came on and only a star lit up but they came on eventually.

“I loved playing in Watford and want to thank everyone who came out to support us tonight.”

This year’s new light installation has been funded by Watford Business Improvement District (BID) and businesses in the town centre.

Watford BID’s chief executive Maria Manion said: “After the disappointment of not being able to host a switch-on event in 2020, we are now even more excited to light up Watford with this spectacular switch-on event.

“It was wonderful to see so many happy faces enjoying our brand-new Christmas lights, they really will create a mesmerising spectacle in our ever-improving town centre.”
