A science-loving sixth former won a Cambridge University competition with an essay on how diseases have altered our genes.

Annabelle Sanouillet beat hundreds of other young people to win the Newnham College in the biological sciences category with her essay ‘Past and present: How has infection shaped the human genome?’.

Annabelle is currently studying A-level biology, chemistry and history at Rickmansworth School.

Despite the prize coming from a Cambridge college, Annabelle wants to go to Oxford to study biological sciences.

Annabelle's first prize won £400 to be split equally between her and her school to fund resources for students.

The annual essay prize competitions are designed to encourage ambitious female sixth formers in state schools to develop their independent research and writing skills at a university level.
