Watford's MP has broken his silence over Boris Johnson after being pictured on TV with supporters at the PM's resignation speech.

Dean Russell was among several Herts Tory MPs not to respond when asked about the Chris Pincher debacle and whether they still supported Mr Johnson.

But after eagle-eyed viewers spotted the Watford MP on BBC News yesterday, his team has confirmed he was there for Mr Johnson's resignation speech.

Mr Johnson wants to remain in office until a successor is appointed - which could be until October with the summer recess just two weeks away.

But there is growing pressure from senior Tories for him the step down immediately - with some calling for Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab to take over until a successor is chosen.

But a spokesperson for Dean Russell's office said: “It is entirely normal for an outgoing Prime Minister to stay on whilst their successor is being determined.

“This was the case for David Cameron, Theresa May and Tony Blair.

“Boris Johnson has confirmed that he will not make any policy decisions during this time of transition.”

Downing Street today insisted Mr Johnson will not leave No 10 before a new leader is installed.

Mr Johnson’s official spokesman said: “He remains Prime Minister until a new party leader is in place and the work of Government will continue while that takes place.”
