There has been a spike in fraudsters intimidating victims into handing over items for sale after contacting them online.
Several crimes have been reported to Herts Police where victims are coerced into handing over items advertised on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree, such as mobile phones, laptops and computers.
Scammers contact victims and arrange to buy an item, then upon arrival they show a fake bank transfer screenshot showing payment is 'pending'.

The suspects can then become intimidating and put pressure on the victim to hand over the items.
The recent increase has sparked police into issuing advice to anyone selling items online.
Sergeant Karen Mellor said: “Where possible, request alternative methods of payment or make sure that the funds have fully cleared in your bank before handing the items over.
“Do not let the ‘buyer’ into your home, and if you are concerned or feel threatened, please phone the police.”
