Citizen’s advice Watford has received 72 per cent more calls for advice on fuel debt than last year due to "chronic" cost of living pressures.

Energy regulator Ofgem has confirmed an 80 per cent rise in the energy price cap - the maximum companies can charge - which will mean the average household’s yearly bill will go from £1,971 to £3,549 from October.

Gas and electricity prices had already increased after the cap was raised by 54 per cent in April.

Citizens Advice Watford says it has seen a 72 per cent year on year rise in the number of people struggling with gas and electricity bills.

Chief Officer Emma Burgham said: “At Citizens Advice Watford, we witness daily the chronic pressures on the community.

“We have seen a 72 per cent increase in requests for advice with fuel debt and we are providing more people with crisis support as they can’t afford to pay essential bills and put food on the table.

“We know that pressures on households are only going to increase.

“Our service is here for everyone, particularly the most vulnerable.”

The average Watford household pays around £2,010 per year for gas and electricity.

When the price cap increases in October, this could soar to approximately £3,780.

Energy charity National Energy Action said millions now face a "big freeze" and urged the Government to act immediately to provide greater support ahead of the winter.
