Work appears to have has started on nine new homes in the Meriden Estate, as residents have raised concerns over the "already overgrown" estate.

Yesterday, a Meriden resident spotted workers and materials at the site where Meriden Primary School, on the estate, once stood.

In June, planning permission was granted for nine three storey terraced homes to be built on the patch of land.

Pat Mulkerrin, who noticed the workers, said: “They are cramming more houses onto an already overgrown estate.”

Another resident said: “We are full, there is absolutely no room for any more property's, they need to concentrate on the disrepair of the ones they already have tenants in.”

Another added: “They should give these to people actually from the Meriden rather than London like the other ones that have been built.”

Watford Observer:

A planning officer at Watford Borough Council decided the scheme, to be accessed via The Meadows, would provide a “good quality of family accommodation”.

Granting permission, the officer added the homes would be “in keeping with the character and appearance of the area”.

A total of 18 car parking spaces will be provided and the homes will include front and back garden space.

Meriden Primary School closed in 2004, with part of the site later developed into the GP surgery.
