Firefighters believe a blaze was "deliberate" after "swarming" Cassiobury Park to put it out.

Two fire engines were spotted after Herts Fire and Rescue were called to the park at 7.08am on Tuesday (September 20) to tackle a fire.

Walker Sally Anne Chapman, 45, said she was told the fire was caused by “idiots setting fire to trees”.

Mrs Chapman was in the park with her daughter Mya, 23, when they noticed two trees were burning.

She said: “The fire crews were swarming it and quickly put it out, but I think there may have been some questions of how stable the larger oak was as they were there for a long while.”

She said they were reassured by firefighters that it was safe for them to stay in the park and keep walking.

The fire service have confirmed they suspect it was started deliberately, but police were not called.

Mrs Chapman added: “We thought we would have a nice morning walk around the park and then looked and thought, oh…it’s on fire.”
