A number of new crossings could be created in Watford as part of plans to make the town centre more pedestrian-friendly.

Watford Borough Council has launched a new round of public consultation seeking feedback on some proposals it has drawn up.

This includes exploring the idea of new pedestrian crossings on the ring road and in Rickmansworth Road.

Although the ring road has existing traffic light crossings and an underpass, the council still believes it is “not easy” to access and “hostile and noisy” for pedestrians and cyclists.

In a bid to make it more “attractive” for walkers and cyclists, new crossings are proposed on the ring road, such as by the junction with Upton Road, to improve accessibility into and out of the town centre.

Such crossings may be colourful and priority always given to pedestrians.

The need for a new crossing has also been identified for those visiting Cassiobury Park.

The council says no “formal” pedestrian crossing exists between the park and town centre, although people “regularly” dash across Rickmansworth Road to get between the two. The closest designated crossing is traffic lights by Cassiobury Park Avenue.

Where people currently cross Rickmansworth Road has the potential to be turned into a signposted pedestrian crossing.

According to a draft framework, further new crossings could also be created by the town hall roundabout.
