Youths have been caught on CCTV kicking and trampling a figure that has been installed to pay tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War.

The Remembrance Tommy silhouette was targeted on the Kingswood estate in Watford on Friday night.

The incident has caused upset in the community and was branded “atrocious” by a councillor.

Footage shows a group of youngsters stamping and flattening the figure outside the North Approach shops at 9.22pm.

The damage has been reported to police, which has confirmed officers are investigating.

Councillor Tim Williams, who funded the Tommy installation, said: “This is atrocious behaviour and total disrespect for those who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms.

“It’s utterly mindless vandalism from the perpetrators. I’ll ensure we’ll have it replaced next year as there’s no way we’ll be defeated by these senseless morons.

“I’ve highlighted this matter to our local police team.”

John Swain, chairman of Kingswood Residents Association, added: “We are absolutely disgusted by this mindless act of criminal damage. Enquiries are ongoing and we are hopeful those responsible can be held to account.”
