A mural of Sir Elton John in Watford town centre has been defaced.

Offensive graffiti was discovered today (December 1) scrawled on the artwork in the subway that runs under the ring road by Vicarage Road.

Watford mayor Peter Taylor says the graffiti will be removed later today and police have been informed.

Watford FC fan John Davies, who noticed and reported the words pasted on the mural, said: “I was shocked and disappointed to see such slurs against [Sir] Elton John. It's mindless vandalism. Let's hope it's removed very quickly.”

The mural was among a number unveiled at the beginning of this year as part of centenary celebrations for both the borough of Watford and 100 years of the football club in Vicarage Road.

Lifelong Hornets fan Sir Elton is a former chairman of Watford FC and serving honorary life-president.

Responding to the graffiti, mayor Mr Taylor said: "We will not let mindless vandalism like this spoil public art in the town. This mural brightens up the area and we should make sure that it can continue to be enjoyed by lots of Watford FC fans for years to come.

"The mural is protected with anti-graffiti coating and Veolia will be removing this later today. It showcases the club and town’s sense of community by improving the subway, as well as highlighting people and players who had an ever-lasting effect on both. It’s a shame it takes one person to ruin it.

"There will be an active investigation by the police and Watford Council to find those responsible. If anyone has information that may be of use please contact the police on 101 or the council."

The project was joint funded by the borough council, Watford FC, and Hertfordshire County Council, with the vast majority of funding secured by Central Watford county councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst through section 106 monies.

Watford FC was also approached for comment.
