A subway blighted by criminal behaviour has had CCTV installed – leaving locals “proud of the area” again.

The stretch in Church Road – connecting Nascot Wood to Watford Junction station –  now has cameras after complaints about drugs, street drinking, begging and fighting.

It comes in addition to new LED lights as part of a refurbishment last year.

Siobhan Garibaldi, who lives nearby, said: “A few instances of antisocial behaviour make you feel fearful about what could happen to you if you bumped into the wrong person.

“The new CCTV, better lighting, and refurbishment of the subway have made a big difference, its brought a feeling of greater safety and made us feel proud of the area again.”

Having gone live at the end of November, the CCTV has been installed inside and at the entrances of the underpass.

It has also been placed along the length of Bridal Path.

The cameras face both directions and capture images on the shopping parade on St Albans Road.

Nascot Liberal Democrat councillor Mark Hofman said: “We hope that brighter, cleaner streets and the reassurance of CCTV in the area will help everyone feel even more confident.”
