Persistent "antisocial" parking outside a school has been branded a "nightmare" as roads clog up during the school run.

The Watford Observer has been told parents are ignoring the yellow lines and 'do not park' signs outside The Orchard Primary School in Gammons Lane, Watford.

Labour councillor Asif Khan, who covers the school's Leggatts Ward, said he is often told about problems during the school runs.

He said: "It’s a regular problem that residents have raised with me. Because people’s drives are being covered over, I will call it ‘antisocial parking’.”

The councillor said he did not blame the school and believes it has done everything possible to “combat the issue”.

When the Watford Observer visited the road earlier this month, several drives had been blocked and one parent branded the situation a "nightmare".

Cllr Khan added: “I’ve been told that parents park in blind corners and it makes it difficult for residents, especially those living in Gammons Farm Close, to drive out of their road.

“And the neighbouring roads are affected as well as parents who park their cars there.

“The bad parking makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross too.”

Cllr Khan hit out at the "inconsiderate" parents who park illegally, but added he understands all parents just want to get their kids to school on time.

“I know this is often the nature of the school run, but I think parents need to set an example,” he said.

Cllr Khan also suggested that parents should try and consider other forms of traveling to the school.

“I know the busses aren’t the best at the moment, but they do go that way.

“Or there needs to be a look at using more sustainable forms of travel, such as walking or cycling.”

The borough councillor also stressed that school parking is a problem that is getting worse across the borough.

The Orchard Primary School has been approached for a response.
