A collapsed sewer has left an "large void" in a Watford road — with works needed to make it safe.

Thames Water closed Jubilee Road, near the junction with Leavesden Road, on Sunday (March 12) after the "sinkhole" opened up in the middle of the carriageway.

Locals described the deep-looking hazard as “insane” and “a significant collapse”, with some concerned the road could be shut for weeks.

This afternoon North Watford county councillor Asif Khan said repairing the road is only expected to take two days, but Thames Water has since added that it is taking longer than expected.

According to One Network, the water company has permission to shut the road for roadworks until the end of March 14, although this could potentially be extended.

Hertfordshire County Council is also shown to be carrying out work to make the area around the “large void” safe.

The diversion route involves using the parallel Brighton Road and appears unlikely to cause major traffic issues.

A Thames Water spokesperson apologised for any disruption.

They added: "Due to the complexities of the repair, the work is taking longer than anticipated to complete.

"We have tankers attending every day to help keep our network running as it should while we continue the repair."
