A man has been charged after thousands of pounds in tobacco and nicotine were stolen following numerous shop break-ins.

Ashley Claircin, 31, from Hemel Hempstead, was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary with intent to steal and is due to appear in St Albans Crown Court on April 24.

Texaco in Primrose Hill, Kings Langley, was broken into on March 24 at around 4.04am before cigarettes were stolen.

Police made an arrest in connection with the offences on the same day.

The arrest followed a series of commercial burglaries across Dacorum between January 26 and March 24 this year.

Multiple convenience stores and petrol garages were targeted with thousands of pounds worth of tobacco, nicotine products and cash reported stolen.

Other break-ins

Ref 41/7155/23

On January 26, between 3.42am and 3.49 am, Tucks and Tonics in Bellgate was broken into and large quantities of cigarettes were stolen. Money was also taken from the till.

On February 8, at around 3.23am, Tucks and Tonics was broken in to and several tobacco items were stolen.

At around 4am on February 9, Martin The Newsagent in Bennetts Gate, Hemel Hempstead, was broken into.

On February 20 at around 4.24am, Londis in Bennetts End Road, Hemel Hempstead, was broken into and cigarettes were stolen.

At around 4.27am on March 1, Martin The Newsagent in Shenley Road was broken into. Tobacco and nicotine products were stolen and cash from the till was taken.

Between 3.54am and 3.59am on March 7, Martin The Newsagent in Shenley Road was broken in to and tobacco and nicotine products were stolen.

Police said the arrest followed "extensive enquiries".

Chief Inspector Jason Keane said: “I hope this result provides reassurance to our local community, and in particular, to our local businesses.

"Our investigation still continues at this time."

He asked anyone with information to get in touch.
