More local election pain has been heaped on the Conservatives in Hertfordshire after losing control of Dacorum Borough Council.

In keeping with many results nationwide, the Tories are no longer the majority party in the borough after losing 13 seats, taking their total down to 18.

The Liberal Democrats have seized control with 28 seats, while Labour have three and two were taken by independent councillors.

It comes after the Tories also lost their majority on the Hertsmere Borough Council.

The change comes after Sir Ed Davey launched the party's campaign in Berhampsted, Hertfordshire, where he joked that “heavy machinery” would be required to clean up the “mess” left by the Conservatives.

Sir Ed was a passenger as the tractor was used to smash down a stack of hay bales painted Tory blue.

The Lib Dem leader told the PA news agency that Tory voters felt “betrayed”.

“People are fed up with the Conservatives," he said. "They think they’ve been taken for granted."
