A "very bad" crash involving two lorries left a car crumpled between them with people inside, a witness has said.

The collision on the A41 between Hemel Hempstead and Kings Langley was at 10.11am today (August 21), and has seen the road shut for hours.

Maria Esquerre, who was driving nearby but did not see the accident, said three people - including a young child - were left badly injured and trapped.

Emergency services have not confirmed how seriously injured anyone is, but a Herts Police spokesperson said they were called to a collision involving two lorries and a car between Hemel Hempstead and Kings Langley, approaching the M25 junction.

A force spokesperson said at 1pm that officers were still at the scene alongside ambulance, air ambulance and fire service crews.

Ms Esquerre claimed three air ambulances had arrived along with "at least 12 to 15" other emergency vehicles to deal with the "gruesome" crash.

Footage from the scene, seen by the Watford Observer, also shows what appears to be wreckage between two lorries, and two more cars damaged nearby.

A Herts Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed earlier that "firefighters are working to release several injured people from vehicles".

At around the same time as the first crash, Herts Police were also called to another separate one involving two vehicles on the same part of the road.

Earlier today an East of England Ambulance spokesperson said: "We received a call at 10.17am with reports of a collision on the A41, Kings Langley. We have a number of resources at the scene where crews are assessing patients."

According to Google Maps, the A41 is still shut, but Ms Esquerre said after hours of being at a standstill traffic is now beginning to move.
