A nursery has said it is “really pleased” with its ‘good’ Ofsted report despite losing ‘outstanding’ status.

After an inspection over two days last month, Oxhey Nursery School was found ‘outstanding’ in terms of personal development but, due to ‘good’ ratings in the other three categories, dropped a grade overall.

The report itself was very positive, however, and highlighted that “children feel welcome, included and valued”, coming to school happy and confident each day.

Particular areas for praise included teaching all children to sign “from the start”, strong foundations to equip children for reading, good communication with families, and strong governorship.

Headteachers Gemma Williamson and Hayley Yendell said: “We are really pleased with the inspection report.

“We have been on a real journey since the last inspection with the introduction of a new, ambitious curriculum.

“We are delighted that our commitment to fostering a holistic approach to education has been recognised, and we are proud to have received outstanding in this crucial area.

“Staff at the school have been really dedicated to developing children's spiritual, moral, and emotional well-being.

“This achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and collaborative effort of our entire school community.”

The Eastbury Road nursery, for children aged two to five, had its last full inspection more than 10 years ago, when it was found ‘outstanding’ in all areas.

At the latest inspection, the inspector thought the school could improve staff knowledge in a few subjects and offer support in some to make sure the curriculum is consistently strong in all areas.

The co-headteachers added: “While we celebrate the positives in this report, we are mindful of the continuous need for improvement and are committed to maintaining a high standard of education for our children.

“We have already begun implementing plans to address the recommendations identified in the inspection report.”

Support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities was found to be “skilful”, offering carefully planned support, and safeguarding was found to be effective.

The Oxhey nursery has 65 pupils currently on its roll and also offers before- and after-school care on site.
