A Wetherspoon pub is set to close in Borehamwood - sparking warnings the area risks becoming a "ghost town".

A spokesperson for the chain confirmed The Hart & Spool in Shenley Road will close as the lease is set to expire, but there is no final trading date yet.

They added there will be no redundancies as staff will be offered the opportunity to move to another branch in the area.

A pub source claimed staff were reportedly told on January 16 that it will close in early March as it wasn't earning enough money.

The spokesperson declined to comment on why it is closing, or confirm when the lease expires.

Malcolm Hibbs, 76, who has lived in the area for 35 years and visits the pub, said it will a "sad day" when it closes.

"It’s a comfortable place I can go into to relax and have something to eat and drink," he added.

"You've got the Halifax and the Barclays closing down so what’s it going to be? A ghost town?

"People are saying 'well it's only a pub', but it's not. It'll be a another place lost."

The pub's name takes inspiration form the local area as 'Hart' symbolises the Hertsmere borough, while 'Spool' represents the area’s film industry and is featured on the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council logo.
