A controversial homes plan has been approved on the third attempt.

Watford Borough Council granted permission for a two-storey family home in Stratford Road, Nascot, to be demolished so that three detached homes can be built in its place at a planning meeting yesterday evening (March 5).

Two of the properties will face out onto Langley Road while the other will face Stratford Road.

Similar previous plans to knock down the house were rejected in 2021 and 2022. The first plan would have seen it replaced with eight flats, while the second included terrace houses.

The terraced plan was rejected because it lacked architectural coherence, was overly dominant, did not fit in with the area, and was “excessive” for the plot of land, according to council officers.

The loss of trees was also raised as an issue.

Compared with that plan, the detached homes meant the massing was broken up, “the majority” of trees are protected, and the look was brought more in-line with the neighbourhood.

There were still 15 objections raised by residents, particularly around its appearance and the driveway via Langley Road being near a junction.

However, the council planning officer judged it had been demonstrated that the driveway was a sufficient distance from the junction.
