Watford Borough Council has confirmed that a “system error” was at fault as residents were spammed with tax emails.
Taxpayers in the town reported receiving up to 11 separate messages about their bills yesterday (March 11) - apparently coming in at a rate of around once every 30 minutes in some cases.
Today, a banner across the top of the Watford Borough Council website says: “If you are calling regarding multiple emails being sent with your new council tax bill attached, there has been a system error, which we have now resolved with our supplier.”

Reaction online was a mix of irritation at the constant notification pings and those seeing the funny side. Recipients wondered if the council may be getting a little “overzealous” or had even "gone mad".
One Watford resident joked that their council tax rises may be resulting from “email costs”.
Watford mayor Peter Taylor said: "We apologise to any residents who has received multiple emails regarding their council tax.
"When we found out this was happening, we immediately contacted the supplier to rectify the issue.
"I'm pleased to confirm that it has now been resolved."
