Four teens have avoided a custodial sentence over affray and grievous bodily harm in Watford that left a man with a broken hip - as the final offender is sentenced.

The teenager appeared at St Albans Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, April 17, over the incident in High Street on July 10, 2022.

The 14-year-old, from north London, was referred to the Youth Offender Panel for three eight-month periods to run concurrently after he admitted causing affray, but did not pay a victim surcharge or court costs as it was deemed "not appropriate".

Two 16-year-olds, from Bushey and Watford, as well as a 15-year-old, from Croxley Green, were also sentenced on March 27.

The Bushey teen was referred to the Youth Offender Panel for two 12-month periods concurrently for causing GBH and affray.

He admitted pushing a trolley into the victim, a man in his 50s, causing him to fall and suffer a hip fracture, and paid £250 in compensation.

The Watford youth was handed a four-month curfew with an electronic tag as part of a youth rehabilitation requirement and must complete 45 hours of a reparation activity over 15 days, while the 15-year-old was referred to the Youth Offender Panel for eight months.  Both pleaded guilty to affray.

Youth Offenders Panels consist of a court representative and two community volunteers who help young people convicted of crimes to make amends to the victim.
