Croxley House off The Green, Croxley Green, has been vacant since the assisted living facility shut soon after being rated 'inadequate' by the CQC in December 2020.
It had appeared set for conversion into a nursery with 120 places, but a planning application for residential use has come forward instead.
Each home would have four bedrooms, with floorplans showing large properties containing drawing rooms and studies.
Applicant Hobbs Developments said this is considered a “more appropriate use of the site when compared with the children’s nursery”.
“Croxley House has been vacant since the former care home closed in January 2021 and it is clear a new use is required to preserve and enhance the listed building,” its application documents added, highlighting the need to prevent it “falling into a state of disrepair”.
“The conversion would secure and safeguard the long-term future of the building.”

The red-brick two-storey building was built in around 1770 and extended in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
It has been a Grade II listed building since 1985 and its site also contains the Grade II listed Well House.
Three Rivers District Council has set December 16 as the determination deadline.
