Readers have shared their best photos of yesterday’s eclipse using everything from high tech cameras to colanders.
More than 90 per cent of the Sun was obscured by the Moon, the most it has been blocked above UK skies since the total eclipse in 1999.
While it did not get as dark as some were expecting, those making use of the ISO 12312-2 solar eclipse glasses were able to get a clearer picture of what was going on.

Stunning timelapse imagery and a range of photos showing the partially covered Sun, as well as the creative methods used to see an impression of the event, have been sent in or shared via the Watford Observer Camera Club.

Following the eclipse, there was a 650 per cent increase in the number of people searching “sore eyes” on Google in the UK compared to the same time on Tuesday, despite many warnings looking directly at the sun would cause eye damage.

Indirect viewing methods allowed people without proper eclipse glasses to take in what was happening. For example, a pinhole projector could be made using a box, aluminium foil, and a white sheet of paper.

By taping foil and paper to both ends of the box and then punching a hole in the foil, people could indirectly view the Sun shining through the hole and onto the paper.

During the different phases of the eclipse, the shadow from the Moon could be seen blocking out the light projected onto the piece of paper.

An alternative involved using a colander, so the different phases of the eclipse could be seen in the shadow it projected onto the ground.
