A new business plans to revive the name of a historic hotel by opening inside the building.

Chorleywood’s The Sportsman Hotel opened in 1889 and went through several different names before closing and being converted into a mix of offices and apartments in around 2007.

Applications have now been submitted to change the ground floor’s use and install signs for a business called The Sportsman – Coffee and More.

Documents state: “The proposals relate to part of the former Sportsman Hotel which is to operate as The Sportsman – Coffee and More.

“The works principally comprise a coordinated scheme of new commercial signage together with minor changes to existing painted finishes.”

Details on the business are limited, besides it being a café serving food and hosting events, while designs include a logo with a man in traditional attire swinging a golf club.

The application acknowledges the building’s importance to Chorleywood’s character.

It says the “modest” changes will allow a modern business to move in while preserving the former hotel’s character and identity.

Keeping the name would maintain “continuity with the building’s historic use and identity”.

Three Rivers District Council is due to decide on the change of use by October 16 and the signage by November 25.
