Dan Gosling said that the players used the week after the win over Luton to not only enjoy the victory but also discuss the need to use it as a springboard to get a run going.

The 1-0 success at Wigan meant the Hornets won back-to-back games for the first time since April 2021.

The four games left before the World Cup break next month are also all against teams currently below Watford in the league.

“We had a sigh of relief at the final whistle but I think we deserved to win,” said Gosling.

“After getting a win last week that meant so much to all of us, to then back it up was the most important thing.

“All week since the Luton game we spoke about how we had to kick on and go again, and these are the games that, if you win them, get you up the league.

“You have to win back-to-back games and then get on runs. What we want is to go and win three, four, five six games.”

Gosling felt that the Hornets should have killed off their hosts before half-time.

“At times we played some really good stuff, and we had a couple of really good chances in the first half that would have put the game to bed I think,” he said.

“We missed them, it’s still 0-0 and it’s a tight game. But coming away and battling to get a win is important. Joao came up with a moment of brilliance and a great header, after a great ball from Yaser.”

Like his head coach did, Gosling played tribute to the parts played by the substitutes in getting the victory.

“Kalu was brilliant when he came on: sharp and positive,” he said.

“That’s what you’re looking for when subs come on, for them to influence the game.

“Yaser came on and got the assist, and it shows we have a good squad. We need to use the players in the squad, and today the three lads who came on were fantastic.”

It was another game, and another clean sheet, with Gosling playing at right back.

“I like it actually and I’m starting to get used to it more and more,” he said.

“With so many games in quick succession you get used to where the spaces are, when to pressure people, the different angles.”
