Many fans commented after Monday’s win over West Brom that a Watford team with Ken Sema in it always looks a better team.

The Swedish international was injured after the Boxing Day game with Millwall and only returned to the team earlier this month.

His participation in the game at Burnley was accelerated because of the pre-match injury to Tom Cleverley, and Sema responded with a very smart assist for Joao Pedro’s goal.

Then on Monday he scored his first two goals since Bilic’s first game in charge, the 4-0 win at Stoke in October.

“Ken is a very good player and a top professional who is great to have,” said Bilic.

“He played as a winger and scored a couple of goals, and then when we needed him in midfield when we adjusted he did that for us.

“Before the game I had said to Ken that he needed to be ready, because if anything had happened to our full backs, he would be the one who would move there.

“Ken is a dream for a manager because he can cover four or five positions, and in every one of them he is good.

“We want him on the wing because there’s no coincidence that recently we struggled to create and score goals, and tonight was the first time in a long time we could put our front four on the pitch.

“Your want your key players on the pitch, and in the second game they start together we create a lot of chances against a very good team.”

At the other end, neither of the goals conceded were great from a defensive point of view, but Albion’s second equaliser was a proper mess, as Daniel Bachmann’s attempt to play the ball to Hamza Choudhury on the edge of the box was intercepted.

“The players have to manage those situations by themselves,” said Bilic.

“That was a mistake. Dan is not great with his feet to be fair, but in the first half he was excellent with his distribution.

“Those things happen. We were 2-1 up and had only scored a few minutes earlier, maybe it was the right decision because Hamza was open, but made in the wrong moment.

“We’d just scored. Let’s kick it out and then start doing those things after five minutes instead.

“But if I am going to ask my players to take responsibility and to play football, then it was the right thing to do. It was the right decision but the wrong execution.”

Bilic said that he wanted Watford to continue to get on the front foot and play good football regardless of the opponent or the venue.

“I want us to approach every game as we did today. Being on the front foot is very important and we have the quality in this division to do that.

“But you can’t dominate a game for 90 minutes, and especially against the likes of West Brom on Monday or Sheffield United this weekend. You want to be on the front foot but you also have to be very good in your own box and defend in numbers.

“But the mentality is what we want to see in every game. There are ups and downs in any performance, but our determination, our planning, our attitude, it has to be like that.

“We have players who like the ball, who want to be on the ball. And that’s what we want to do.”
