Parents letting schoolchildren out of their cars on main roads because of heavy traffic is "an accident waiting to happen", a commuter fears.

Administrator Debbie Watts drives to her office in west Watford from Borehamwood each day and says her journey has more than doubled since schools reopened.

But Mrs Watts is most concerned by parents of children at Westfield Academy dropping them off in traffic in Tolpits Lane and Hagden Lane.

She said: “Something needs to be done about the congestion.

“It’s got so bad parents are dropping them off in the middle of the road.

“The kids don’t take any notice and they just step out into the road.

“At some point someone will not be paying attention and it’s an accident waiting to happen."

Mrs Watts, 49, added that an agreed place to park is needed to allow parents to stop and let their children out, rather than letting them out in slow moving traffic.

She added: “Something has to be done.

“I don’t see why they can’t work something out to get an agreement to use the Morrisons car park, it backs onto the school.

“Or the school should have a drop off point where buses can pick the kids up so there isn't so much congestion around the school.”

Mrs Watts added that the traffic congestion has made her late to work recently, despite leaving far earlier than during the holidays.

She added: “If I leave anything after 7am, a 20-minute drive becomes over an hour.

"The moment parents start dropping their kids off and I'm anywhere near that school I can be stuck for a good hour.

“When the kids were on holiday, I was leaving around 7.40am, now I'm leaving at 6.30am to be safe.

“There was a morning I left at 7.15am and got in at 8.35am just because of the school.

“Fuel prices are expensive enough without having to burn fuel because the kids are too lazy to walk to school.

“Going via Rickmansworth makes no difference to the time it takes to get there, the traffic is that bad, all because of that school.”
