A Chinese restaurant in Bushey has been awarded a higher rating after a one out of five food hygiene inspection.

Eat Well in Aldenham Road was given a five out of five score last week after it originally received a one out of five in June.

Hertsmere District Council has confirmed that the restaurant has a new score after a re-inspection.

A spokesperson for the restaurant said: “We are very pleased with the result of the reinspection, the staff have worked hard to ensure the place is clean and we are looking forward to sharing the good news with customers.

“The low score has not been good for business, but we are hoping that with the improvements we have made the space will remain clean and to a high standard.”

The original inspection confirmed the management of food safety had “major improvement necessary”.

There are three areas which are inspected by the food safety officer: hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and management of food safety.

The restaurant has been open in Bushey for 20 years and the owners were “very shocked” with the low scoring.

Although the rating has not been updated online, a Hertsmere Borough Council spokesperson confirmed the eatery has been graded 5/5 and will be receiving a confirmation letter this week.

In the previous inspection, a “heavy” coat of grease was found on pipework near the cooking range, extension leads in the kitchen which were “very dirty” and close to the food packing material.

There was also dirt found on floors under and behind equipment, on the electronic fly killer and on the toilet door.

It was also found that the takeaway was storing uncovered food in a fridge and concerns were raised by the food inspector about cross-contamination.

The staff were all called to go on a refresher training as the inspector had confirmed they all had the appropriate hygiene training.

In the report, the inspector said: “These issues outlined in the report would not have arisen if you had applied what you had learnt.”
