Three pubs within a half hour drive of Watford have been named among the 60 best places to get a roast dinner.

Muddy Stilettos, “the urban guide to the countryside”, released its list of the best pub roasts on Wednesday (October 25) with three entries likely to take 20 to 30 minutes to reach from Watford.

The Alford Arms and The Plough (Sleapshyde), near Berkhamsted and St Albans respectively, made the list for Hertfordshire while Amersham’s The Griffin just about sneaks under the half-hour mark despite being in Buckinghamshire.

Gastropub The Alford Arms is in Frithsden, which is north-west of Hemel Hempstead and north-east of Berkhamsted.

Admitting that “it may be off the beaten track”, Muddy Stilettos described the Sunday roasts as a “real treat” with two available as well as veggie options.

Meanwhile, The Plough off Sleapshyde Lane, (not to be confused with the nearby and also lovely The Plough in Tyttenhanger) is praised for its strong focus on craft beers, wines, and spirits as well as the luxurious Sunday lunch.

It enjoys two AA rosettes for the "excellent" food.

“You’d be forgiven for flocking to this restaurant for its sleek interiors and endless photo ops,” the online publication says of The Griffin, in The Broadway. However, it adds that the menu is “just as pristinely curated” while warning you may have to book a month in advance.
