Seven refugee families from Ukraine have been made homeless after being offered accommodation.

Government data shows that seven families are owed a homelessness prevention or relief duty in Watford, as of July 29.

This includes three families with "dependent children".

In five cases the refugees’ found their accommodation was not suitable upon their arrival and in two the arrangements broke down.

There have been 90 visas issued for refugees staying with hosts in Watford, with 59 having arrived so far, as of August 2.

The Refugee Council, a charity which advocates for those fleeing conflict, said that support and advice was needed to stop arrangements from breaking down and refugees becoming homeless.

CEO Enver Solomon added that the cost-of-living crisis was an "additional burden" on those who have already faced significant hardship.

Refugees minister Richard Harrington, former Conservative MP for Watford, said: “We initially asked sponsors to host for a minimum of six months and we are working closely with councils to ensure Ukrainians have a safe place to live if they decide to move on."
