A Watford woman has broken the world record for keeping a balloon in the air – topping the previous time by just seven seconds.

Anita Young set the official Guinness World Record with Georgia Alford, from Clapham, with the pair touching the balloon more than 3,000 times.

They kept it aloft for one hour and 39 minutes in front of thousands of passers-by at Kings Cross Station on November 12.

Georgia said: "It felt absolutely amazing breaking the Guinness World Record.

"It took a couple of tries and there were some hairy moments, but Anita’s positivity and determination pulled us through. We did it and I'm really proud."

They set the record in front of a Guinness World Record officiator to raise awareness around the #BlueBalloonChallenge for Medtronic Diabetes UK & Ireland, and as part of National Diabetes Month.

Anita added: "Our aim was to break the record as a show of support to the Type 1 diabetes community, and to show the wider public what it feels like for people living with diabetes every day – having to constantly monitor and balance your insulin, day in and day out."
