The Northern Lights appear to have been visible from Hertfordshire last night as a local snapped a picture.

Usually, Scotland is the only part of the UK that is lucky enough to see the natural wonder.

However, the Met Office confirmed on Sunday (February 26) that "a coronal hole high-speed stream" would be combined with a "fast coronal mass ejection" allowing the lights to be seen across the UK.

Joel Rabinowitz was “shocked” that his idea of driving out to Heartwood Forest, near St Albans, paid off.

The local said: “I’d never heard of people seeing them this far south.

“I was a bit shocked really.”

Anyone hoping to spot the wonder themselves may have another chance tonight (February 27), but just looking up won’t be enough.

The Aurora Borealis enthusiast explained how he managed to capture his picture, taken at around 11pm

“It’s not like seeing it in Norway or Finland, I’m not sure if you were just walking by you would have known it was there,” he said.

“The sky out there was very clear and there was less light pollution so I looked north and used the camera, the camera will usually pick up better colour than the eye, and then once my eyes adjusted I could see the faint colours.”
