Smashed windows and graffiti have blighted a former Watford office building set for demolition amid reports of anti-social behaviour.

The former TJX and Sun Alliance building at 50 Clarendon Road, Watford, is currently vacant as it is set to be replaced with a block of 247 rented homes along with 4,800sqm of office space in buildings of five, seven, 17, and 24 storeys.

The bulk of the scheme was initially rejected in 2022 but then approved after appeal in September 2023. Amendments to the plan to bring it in-line with emerging fire safety regulations were then green-lit in March this year.

However, ahead of any building work taking place, the site itself has been under threat with reports of youths breaking windows and trashing the interior.

Concerns have been raised over the security of the site and the risk that someone could get hurt if action is not taken.

Herts Police have confirmed they are aware of the issue. A spokesperson said: “We have received reports of anti-social behaviour that we have attended, in company with our partners at Watford Borough Council, and arrangements have been made with the property agent to secure it.”
